Hydrocarbons in diffuse and translucent clouds
نویسنده
چکیده
We investigate the consequences on hydrocarbon chemistry in diffuse and translucent clouds of including an interaction between gaseous C+ ions and dust grains. In general, we find that models in which much of the carbon is deposited and retained on grain surfaces within the cloud lifetime represent a poor match to observations. Conversely, models in which carbon is efficiently converted to methane generally provide satisfactory agreement with the observed chemistry of translucent clouds. Such models also predict that the hydrocarbons C2H, C3H2 and H2CO may be detectable in diffuse clouds.

Dense and diffuse gas in dynamically active clouds
We investigate the chemical and observational implications of repetitive transient dense core formation in molecular clouds. We allow a transient density fluctuation to form and disperse over a period of 1 Myr, tracing its chemical evolution. We then allow the same gas immediately to undergo further such formation and dispersion cycles. The chemistry of the dense gas in subsequent cycles is sim...
متن کاملSiO in diffuse, translucent and ‘spiral-arm’ clouds
Using the Plateau de Bure interferometer, we searched for thermal SiO J=1-2 absorption at 86 GHz from the diffuse and translucent clouds which lie toward our sample of extragalactic continuum sources. SiO is present at a level N(SiO)/N(HCO+) ≈ 0.01 − 0.1, or N(SiO)/N(H2) ≈ 2 × 10−11 − 2 × 10−10. N(SiO) declines with increasing N(HCO+) and with increasing thermal pressure measured in the J=1-0 l...
متن کاملDiffuse Atomic and Molecular Clouds
Diffuse interstellar clouds have long been thought to be relatively devoid of molecules, because of their low densities and high radiation fields. However, in the past ten years or so, a plethora of polyatomic molecules have been observed in diffuse clouds, via their rotational, vibrational, and electronic transitions. In this review, we propose a new systematic classification method for the di...
متن کاملSe p 20 02 Inferring physical conditions in interstellar clouds of H 2 Matthew
We have developed a code that models the formation, destruction, radiative transfer, and vibrational/rotational excitation of H2 in a detailed fashion. We discuss generally how such codes, together with FUSE observations of H2 in diffuse and translucent lines of sight, may be used to infer various physical parameters. We illustrate the effects of changes in the major physical parameters (UV rad...
متن کاملUltraviolet Sky Radiance Distributions of Translucent Overcast Skies
The diffuse sky radiation component in the ultraviolet wavelengths is often at least 50% of the global irradiance under clear skies, and is the dominant component of ultraviolet global radiation under translucent overcast skies. The distribution of sky radiance was measured in a rural area and modeled for wavelength bands of ultraviolet-B (UVB, 280-320 nm) and ultraviolet-A (UVA, 320-400 nm). S...
